In August, Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch welcomed a new leader at the helm—Michelle Beaudoin, a seasoned veteran with over 20 years of experience in the behavioral health industry. These two California-based addiction treatment providers are part of the Sierra Tucson Group, which is owned by Acadia Healthcare, a major player in behavioral health services.
Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch offer a range of specialized addiction treatments including residential treatment, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and detoxification services. With Michelle Beaudoin’s leadership, there’s a new vision on the horizon—one that prioritizes the enhancement of current services and the introduction of specialty offerings that will benefit a wider range of individuals in need.
Behavioral Health Business recently connected with Beaudoin to discuss her strategic vision, leadership philosophy, and plans for the future of the facilities under her direction. This interview provides insight into her thoughts on the evolving landscape of addiction treatment, employee satisfaction, and patient care.
Transition to the New Role: A Vision for the Future
BHB: Congratulations on your new role as CEO of Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch! How has the transition been, and what have you been focused on in your first month?
Beaudoin: Thank you! It’s been an exciting transition. I just completed my orientation in Tennessee, and it was incredible to see the wealth of resources Acadia Healthcare provides to support its various programs. The first month has been everything I hoped for and more. I’m passionate about the work we do, so I wake up every day excited to dive in.
My focus has been on getting to know the staff and clients on a deeper level, understanding the strengths of the programs, and identifying areas where we can grow. It’s essential to recognize what’s already working well and what can be improved. I want the staff to feel that I’m authentic and approachable. I have worked in direct care roles for many years, and I bring that experience with me to this position. I want my team to know they can trust me, and together we can bring positive change to these programs.
From Counselor to CEO: The Journey to Leadership
BHB: Can you walk us through your career and what led you to take on this CEO role at Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch?
Beaudoin: Absolutely. My journey into behavioral health started with a background in business management, but I stumbled upon addiction treatment almost by accident. Once I was exposed to the field, I fell in love with the work. I became a counselor and worked my way up to supervisor, then clinical director. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work in some great programs, and I always aimed to help improve the lives of those struggling with substance use disorders (SUD).
What attracted me to Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch was the opportunity to elevate what are already fantastic programs. Both facilities are in beautiful, serene environments that I believe play a critical role in the healing process. It’s not just about the clinical care, it’s also about the environment in which that care is delivered. Clients need a space where they can find peace and begin to heal, and these two places offer exactly that.
Taking Things to the Next Level: Growth and Specialization
BHB: What are your plans to take the programs at Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch to the next level?
Beaudoin: Both Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch are already client-centered and operate with a trauma-informed approach, which is crucial in addiction treatment. My goal is to deepen this trauma-informed perspective across all levels of care, ensuring that it’s not just a clinical approach but also something that extends to how we support and care for our staff.
One of my key priorities is to expand services for specialized populations. For instance, we’ve recently contracted with Tri-West to begin serving the veteran population. Veterans, as well as first responders, often experience unique challenges due to the trauma they’ve faced in their professions. These individuals need specialized care that addresses both their physical and psychological wounds. Our tranquil environments—whether by the beach or nestled in the rolling hills of Jurupa Valley—are perfect settings for healing.
Learning from the Leaders: Inspiration and Innovation
BHB: Are you looking to industry leaders, such as Caron Treatment Centers, for inspiration when expanding specialized services at Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch?
Beaudoin: Absolutely. Caron Treatment Centers is a great example of a provider that’s doing excellent work with specialized populations. During my time as clinical director at a facility in New York, I helped secure funding for a 25-bed veterans’ unit focused on PTSD and SUDs. The experience I gained in understanding the needs of veterans will directly inform our approach to specialized services here. We’ve seen firsthand what works and what doesn’t in traditional settings, so I’m excited to bring those insights to Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch.
We’re not just taking a one-size-fits-all approach; we’re developing programs that speak to the unique needs of our clients. That’s the key to real recovery.
Unique Environments: The Heart of Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Ranch
BHB: Can you talk about the differences between Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch, both in terms of their environments and their patient populations?
Beaudoin: The two locations are quite different in terms of setting, but they share a commitment to providing top-tier care in tranquil, restorative environments.
Sunrise Recovery Ranch is located in a pastoral setting, surrounded by rustic cabins and rolling hills. The ranch offers opportunities for hiking, outdoor therapy, and equine-assisted therapy. The serene landscape provides a perfect backdrop for individuals seeking a grounded and peaceful healing experience.
On the other hand, Sierra by the Sea is located on the beach, offering the sound of waves and expansive ocean views. The facility incorporates activities like yoga, sound healing, and somatic exercises—providing a holistic approach to healing. The beach setting offers a therapeutic atmosphere that’s perfect for those looking to reconnect with themselves.
The environments speak to different needs and preferences, so we tailor treatment to match what individuals are seeking. Some clients might be drawn to the rustic charm of the ranch, while others might be more inclined toward the calming effects of the ocean.
What Sets Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Ranch Apart
BHB: What makes Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch unique compared to other addiction treatment facilities?
Beaudoin: Aside from the beautiful, tranquil settings, I believe what really sets us apart is the combination of high-quality clinical care and holistic services. Both programs have a full medical staff on-site, allowing us to provide medically supported detox and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Additionally, we offer eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to help clients address trauma.
We’re also committed to ensuring that clients are introduced to sober support options that will help them maintain their recovery long after they leave our programs. Our approach isn’t just about treating addiction; it’s about creating a foundation for long-term recovery.
Another factor that sets us apart is our focus on ethics. We operate under a strong ethical framework, ensuring that our clients receive the highest standard of care. We’re committed to doing things the right way and maintaining a positive reputation in the community.
Navigating Challenges in the Post-COVID World
BHB: How has COVID-19 impacted operations at Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch? Have you seen any effects on census?
Beaudoin: The pandemic certainly changed the landscape of addiction treatment, but we’ve managed to navigate it well. While there was a slight dip in census at the beginning, we’ve remained resilient. People still need treatment, and we’re here to provide it.
We’ve implemented robust COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of both clients and staff. This includes following CDC guidelines, enhanced sanitation practices, and ensuring that our facilities are well-ventilated. We’re also fortunate that our environments allow for a level of social distancing that other more confined facilities may not be able to offer.
A Vision for the Future: Growth and Expansion
BHB: What unique opportunities do you see for Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch going forward?
Beaudoin: One of the greatest opportunities I see is expanding the vertical integration of our services. Right now, we offer detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization programs, and intensive outpatient programs, but we can do more. I want to see us build out the full spectrum of care, so that clients can access treatment at any stage of their recovery journey.
With the rise of virtual care and technology, there are new and innovative ways to support clients. Apps, telemedicine, and virtual recovery groups can help bridge the gap between inpatient treatment and life outside the facility. We have the opportunity to integrate these technologies into our existing programs, providing clients with continuous support.
Additionally, I see potential for partnerships and collaborations that will help us serve specialized populations even better. We’re already making strides with veterans and first responders, but there are many other groups with unique needs that we can serve.
Overcoming Industry Challenges
BHB: What challenges do you foresee, and how do you plan to address them?
Beaudoin: The biggest challenge we face, as with most in the industry, is recruiting and retaining staff. This is an emotionally demanding field, and burnout can be a real issue. But I believe creating a positive culture is key. When staff feel valued, supported, and empowered, that translates into better care for clients.
Additionally, we’ll continue to face challenges with the ongoing effects of the pandemic, but I’m confident in our ability to stay responsive and adaptable.
Looking Ahead: Goals as CEO
BHB: What are your goals as CEO of Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch?
Beaudoin: My goal is to continue building upon the strong foundation of these programs while expanding and innovating where possible. I want to ensure we’re offering the best care possible, and that our staff feel supported and empowered.
I’m also excited to help develop future leaders within our organization and create opportunities for growth within the team. I want to ensure we’re building something that will last and continue to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Conclusion
Michelle Beaudoin’s leadership marks an exciting chapter for Sierra by the Sea and Sunrise Recovery Ranch. With her extensive experience in behavioral health, a passion for serving specialized populations, and a focus on employee satisfaction, Beaudoin is poised to lead these scenic addiction treatment centers into a future of innovation and growth.
