American Well Corp., known as Amwell (NYSE: AMWL), is making significant moves to secure a strong foothold in the expanding telehealth behavioral health market. With an estimated $52 billion opportunity internationally, behavioral health represents the largest single segment within Amwell’s identified total addressable market (TAM) of $77 billion. In the U.S. alone, digital behavioral health accounts for approximately $29 billion of that figure.

Strategic Acquisitions Strengthen Amwell’s Presence in the Telehealth Behavioral Health Market

A pivotal step in Amwell’s strategy was the 2021 acquisition of SilverCloud Health, a digital mental health provider, along with Conversa Health, a virtual automation and patient engagement platform. Together, these acquisitions—valued at around $320 million—strengthen Amwell’s capabilities to deliver a full spectrum of telehealth behavioral health services.

Amwell aims to build comprehensive offerings that range from automated, self-guided content to synchronous and asynchronous engagement with providers. This approach allows Amwell to address varying patient needs and improve access to behavioral health care, a critical goal in the growing telehealth behavioral health market.

International Expansion Through SilverCloud’s NHS Contract

SilverCloud’s success includes a contract with the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) to deliver behavioral health services across Wales, a region with 3 million residents. This achievement signals Amwell’s potential to expand internationally within the telehealth behavioral health market.

CEO Ido Schoenberg highlighted that Amwell expects subscription revenue growth in 2022 fueled by SilverCloud and Conversa Health’s automated care programs. This recurring revenue model aligns with broader industry trends emphasizing sustained engagement and value-based care in behavioral health, which continues to drive growth in the telehealth behavioral health market.

Growing Provider Network Fuels Amwell’s Market Reach

Amwell’s provider network has also expanded since 2019 with the acquisition of Aligned Telehealth Inc., now boasting more than 1,600 behavioral health providers and a total of over 6,500 providers across specialties in the Amwell Medical Group. This robust network positions the company to meet increasing demand in the telehealth behavioral health market.

Industry Trends Reflect Strong Growth in Telehealth Behavioral Health Market

Amwell’s strategy reflects a wider industry movement. Teladoc Health (NYSE: TDOC), for instance, reported that its BetterHelp mental health platform generated $700 million in 2021, underscoring the size and growth potential of the behavioral health market globally. Teladoc’s strong revenue growth—primarily driven by mental health services—affirms the sector’s vast untapped potential, as many users seek therapy for the first time.

Meeting Unmet Needs Through Digital Innovation

The immense unmet need for accessible mental health care globally makes the behavioral health market a priority for innovators like Amwell. By integrating technology, automated content, and extensive provider networks, Amwell aims to deliver scalable, high-quality care to address this demand.

Looking ahead, Amwell’s combination of technology-driven platforms, international expansion, and provider expertise uniquely positions it to capture significant value in the evolving behavioral health market—a space expected to continue rapid growth as digital solutions reshape mental health care worldwide.
