Headspace Health Acquires Shine Inc. to Strengthen Diversity in Digital Mental Health

Shine Acquisition Expands DEI&B Initiatives

Headspace Health, the Santa Monica-based digital mental health company, has announced its acquisition of Shine Inc., a mobile mental health platform dedicated to inclusion and supporting marginalized communities. Shine’s team is highly diverse, with roughly 80% identifying as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color. The platform’s self-guided content is specifically designed to meet the mental health needs of underrepresented groups, helping close the equity gap and advance diversity in digital mental health. Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Founded in 2016 by Marah Lidey and Naomi Hirabayashi, Shine has made a significant impact in the mental health space over the past six years. The company has reached 6 million users, gained more than 45,000 paid subscribers, and partnered with over 90 enterprise clients through its B2B product, Shine at Work. Lidey and Hirabayashi will now assume leadership roles on Headspace Health’s product and marketing teams, respectively. Lidey emphasized the importance of the merger in a statement, saying, “After six years of building Shine, we’re thrilled to join Headspace Health to scale the urgent work of closing the equity gap in mental health – something [co-founder Naomi Hirabayashi] and I have often felt first-hand.”

Headspace Health Growth and Market Reach

Headspace Health has steadily grown its presence in the digital mental health sector, offering meditation, wellness, coaching, therapy, and psychiatry services. In October 2021, it merged with the on-demand mental health platform Ginger.io in a deal valuing the combined company at $3 billion. Today, Headspace Health reaches over 100 million people across 190 countries and serves more than 3,700 enterprise clients, including major companies such as Starbucks, Adobe, and Delta Air Lines. The acquisition of Shine fits into Headspace Health’s strategic vision of providing inclusive mental health resources while fostering a workforce that mirrors the diversity of the communities it serves.

Promoting Diversity in Digital Mental Health

CEO Russell Glass highlighted that Headspace Health’s focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B) guided the decision to acquire Shine. The company has invested in cultural competency training for its care providers and internal teams while expanding content tailored to the needs of marginalized groups. “By acquiring Shine now, we’re able to significantly advance these DEI&B efforts by bringing on an experienced and talented team that seamlessly aligns with our vision, mission, and values, and has been doing similar work for the past six years,” Glass explained. This acquisition is a major step in promoting diversity in digital mental health at a time when accessible and culturally competent resources are more important than ever.

A Strong Position Amid Industry Challenges

The acquisition comes amid a challenging period for many digital health companies. Mental wellness app Calm announced layoffs affecting 20% of its workforce in August, while other companies like Foresight Mental Health, Cerebral, and Circulo faced operational difficulties and restructuring. Despite these challenges, Headspace Health has been in a position to continue hiring strategically and pursue acquisitions that strengthen its offerings. Glass emphasized that the company’s focus remains on scaling specific strategic areas and fostering sustainable growth. By investing in diversity in digital mental health, Headspace Health is setting itself apart from competitors struggling in a turbulent market.

Headspace Health’s acquisition of Shine also follows the company’s earlier purchase of San Francisco-based startup Sayana Inc., which bolstered the company’s AI and robo-chat capabilities.
