Autism therapy provider Acorn Health announced Tuesday that it has completed an ABA therapy centers acquisition, acquiring seven centers from Breakthrough Behavior, a Maitland, Florida-based operator. The move reflects Acorn Health’s continued growth during a period when several of the largest operators in the autism treatment space are rationalizing their portfolios.

The acquisition includes Breakthrough Behavior’s entire six-location Florida portfolio, with centers in downtown Orlando, Longwood, Riverview, East Orange, Championsgate, and Kissimmee, plus a seventh location in Stafford, Virginia. This ABA therapy centers acquisition expands Acorn Health’s total location count to 77, strengthening its presence in both in-home and facility-based autism services.

“Our team is excited to offer Acorn Health’s expertise in ABA therapy within these markets,” said Vicki Kroviak, CEO and board chair. “Even as we grow as an organization, it remains vital to maintain our focus on delivering best-in-class clinical services. This ABA therapy centers acquisition allows us to extend that quality of care to more children and families.”

Strategic Growth in ABA Therapy

Founded in 2018 by Kroviak and private equity firm MBF Healthcare Partners, Acorn Health has consistently focused on expanding access to ABA therapy through strategic growth and acquisitions. In 2021, MBF Healthcare Partners sold the company to the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, at which point Acorn Health operated 51 locations. Since then, the company has continued to expand, emphasizing both clinical excellence and patient access.

This latest ABA therapy centers acquisition comes amid a time of moderation in investments across the autism therapy sector. Several major ABA providers have recently implemented layoffs, reflecting a broader trend of consolidation and portfolio rationalization in the industry. In July 2025, Behavioral Health Business reported over 650 layoffs at just two major ABA companies.

Industry sources attribute this slowdown to the rapid influx of capital in previous years, which pressured providers to grow aggressively and negotiate higher reimbursements from payers. In contrast, Acorn Health has pursued a measured, strategic approach, focusing on sustainable expansion and high-quality care.

Leadership and Mission

A distinguishing feature of Acorn Health is its leadership and organizational culture. Founded and led by women, the company emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity, and mission-driven care. Kroviak highlighted on LinkedIn that Acorn Health is “actively hiring in almost every market to expand our reach,” emphasizing that the company continues to invest in human capital as part of its growth strategy.

“This ABA therapy centers acquisition is a clear example of our commitment to moving children with autism toward more independent and meaningful lives,” Kroviak wrote. The company’s approach ensures that families benefit from individualized treatment plans and evidence-based ABA therapy programs.

What the Acquisition Means for Families and the Industry

For families, this expansion means increased access to qualified clinicians, enhanced continuity of care, and more program offerings. Acorn Health combines facility-based services with in-home therapy, ensuring children receive consistent care across multiple settings.

For the ABA therapy industry, this ABA therapy centers acquisition represents a strategic consolidation in a space that has experienced rapid growth and recent retrenchment. While some providers are scaling back, Acorn Health demonstrates that thoughtful expansion through an ABA therapy centers acquisition remains a viable path to increase access while maintaining high clinical standards.

Looking Ahead

As the ABA therapy market continues to evolve, Acorn Health’s expansion positions the company as a leading provider of autism services. By continuing to pursue acquisitions strategically, such as this ABA therapy centers acquisition, Acorn Health ensures it can meet growing demand while delivering high-quality, individualized care.

With 77 locations nationwide and a focus on clinical excellence, Acorn Health is setting a benchmark for growth and quality in the ABA therapy space, helping children with autism and their families thrive.
