Outpatient mental health provider Resilience Lab announced Thursday that it has closed a $15 million Series A funding round, signaling a major step forward in its mission to expand mental health services and strengthen the mental health workforce to address the national shortage of trained clinicians.

The round was led by investment firms Viewside Capital Partners and Morningside, with participation from 20 unnamed health and technology entrepreneurs, according to a company news release. The capital is expected to accelerate Resilience Lab’s growth initiatives, particularly in its education segment, while strengthening its hybrid clinical practice and proprietary technology offerings.

Addressing a Critical Mental Health Workforce Gap

The United States faces a persistent shortage of mental health providers, a problem that has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a survey from the American Psychological Association, 60% of psychologists report having no openings for new patients, and 72% report longer waitlists compared to pre-pandemic levels. The existing workforce can meet just 28% of the mental health care need in underserved communities.

Resilience Lab is tackling this issue by expanding the mental health workforce through its Resilience Institute, a board-certified continuing education program designed to train new clinicians. Since its launch in March, the Institute has been preparing to train 20,000 clinicians, helping to ensure a steady supply of qualified therapists who can meet rising demand.

Stephen Raggio, co-founder and managing partner of Viewside Capital Partners, emphasized the importance of the company’s approach:

“Resilience Lab is a major step forward on prevailing disruptor models in behavioral care delivery. It is the first sustainable model that takes a long-term, multivariate approach to solving the quality therapy bottleneck prevalent in the U.S. today.”

A Multi-Segment Approach to Strengthening the Mental Health Workforce

Resilience Lab operates across three primary segments, each contributing to the company’s mission to improve access to high-quality mental health care and expand the mental health workforce.

Hybrid Mental Health Practice

The first segment is its hybrid mental health practice, which employs more than 200 therapists. This model combines in-person and virtual care, allowing patients to access therapy services in the way that best suits their needs. By scaling therapist availability through hybrid care, Resilience Lab is helping to build a stronger mental health workforce capable of meeting the growing demand.

Resilience Institute

The Resilience Institute represents the company’s commitment to clinician training and workforce development. Many social work, counseling, and psychiatry graduates face challenges in transitioning from academic training to clinical practice, often due to limited supervised hours or experience in roles unrelated to therapy.

Therapist and Columbia University professor Christine Carville, co-founder of Resilience Lab, explained the motivation behind the initiative:

“I started Resilience Lab because I believe we can bridge the gap between academia, active therapeutic work with clients, and clinicians making a living in what they are trained, and love, to do.”

Through the Institute, Resilience Lab is developing the mental health workforce by training clinicians to the highest professional standards and equipping them with the practical experience needed to deliver high-quality care.

Resilience Dashboard

The third segment is Resilience Dashboard, a proprietary software system that streamlines administrative processes while measuring clinical outcomes. The platform uses machine learning and collaboration software to automate billing, reimbursements, and reporting, reducing administrative burden on therapists. By supporting clinicians in delivering care efficiently, Resilience Dashboard contributes to strengthening the mental health workforce at scale.

Stephen Raggio highlighted the synergy between scaling clinician supply and enhancing professional development:

“[Resilience Lab’s leadership] have demonstrated that scaling therapist supply and developing therapists to the top of their craft are not mutually exclusive, ultimately benefiting the broader mental health workforce.”

Expanding to Meet Growing Demand

Since its founding in 2019 by Christine Carville and technology entrepreneur Marc Goldberg, Resilience Lab has been growing steadily and preparing for accelerated expansion.

In July, Resilience Lab expanded into Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, adding to its presence in three other states and bringing its footprint to five states overall. The company is currently in-network with major insurers, including Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Humana, ensuring patients have access to affordable care.

In August, the company strengthened its leadership team by bringing on three executives with experience at fast-growing startups, including WeWork and Airbnb, to guide operational scaling and organizational development. This strategic focus is aimed at supporting the growth and sustainability of the mental health workforce nationwide.

The Broader Mental Health Context

The shortage of mental health providers in the U.S. is a long-standing issue, particularly in underserved areas where the demand for care far outpaces supply. Limited access can lead to longer wait times, increased stress, and poorer mental health outcomes. Resilience Lab’s multi-pronged approach—combining education, clinical services, and technology—addresses these systemic challenges while simultaneously expanding the mental health workforce.

By training new clinicians, expanding hybrid care services, and implementing technology that improves care efficiency, Resilience Lab is tackling several bottlenecks at once:

  • Increasing the mental health workforce to meet demand.
  • Enhancing clinician quality through supervised training and education.
  • Optimizing care delivery through technology that tracks outcomes and automates administrative tasks.

Investor Backing and Strategic Partnerships

The Series A round highlights growing investor interest in behavioral health innovation.

  • Morningside, based in Boston, has invested in multiple digital mental health and neuroscience companies, including Aural Analytics, Big Health, Cognoa, and Linus Health.
  • Viewside Capital Partners, a Dallas-based healthcare-focused private equity firm, specializes in small- and middle-market companies in healthcare technology and services.

This combination of healthcare and technology-focused investors positions Resilience Lab to expand its reach, strengthen the mental health workforce, and scale innovative care delivery models.

Looking Ahead

With the $15 million Series A funding round, Resilience Lab is poised to accelerate growth and impact. The company’s ambitious goals include:

  • Training 20,000 new clinicians through the Resilience Institute.
  • Expanding hybrid care services to more states and underserved communities.
  • Enhancing technology capabilities to streamline operations and measure outcomes.

In a country where mental health needs are rapidly outpacing available resources, Resilience Lab’s integrated approach represents a forward-thinking, scalable solution. By combining education, clinical services, and innovative technology, the company is addressing challenges of access, quality, and workforce development simultaneously, ultimately strengthening the mental health workforce and improving care for patients nationwide.
