Aware Recovery Care, a Wallingford, Connecticut-based provider of in-home addiction treatment, has appointed Martha Mather as its new chief operating officer. Mather, the third executive to hold the COO position in 2022, will report directly to CEO Brian Holzer and help lead the company through a pivotal period of growth, including its in-home addiction treatment expansion and operational scaling.

Strengthening Leadership for Growth

Before joining Aware Recovery Care, Mather served as CEO of Peace Hospital, a 261-bed psychiatric hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Over 13 years, she helped guide the hospital under UofL Health Inc., a nonprofit health system affiliated with the University of Louisville, establishing herself as a respected leader in behavioral health. Mather holds a master’s degree in mental health counseling and is a licensed professional counselor, bringing both clinical expertise and executive leadership to her new role.

“There is no doubt that Aware is a special, mission-driven organization,” Mather said. “I am very impressed with the leadership team that is in place, and I couldn’t be happier to be joining an organization that is making a tangible difference in the lives of those impacted by the disease of addiction.”

Meeting the Growing Need for Treatment

Substance use disorder affects millions of Americans. National survey data indicates that as many as 14.5% of Americans aged 12 and older have a substance use disorder, highlighting the critical need for accessible addiction treatment. Aware Recovery Care’s in-home model provides an alternative to traditional inpatient care, offering personalized, clinically supervised support in patients’ own homes. The organization’s in-home addiction treatment expansion ensures that more individuals can access care where it is most comfortable and effective.

A Strategic Leadership Reset

Mather’s appointment is part of a broader executive restructuring under CEO Brian Holzer, who assumed leadership in April 2022. The leadership reset reflects a strategic effort to strengthen the executive team, enhance operational efficiency, and position Aware Recovery Care for national scale.

“Adding Martha as COO helps position Aware for continued, robust growth,” Holzer said. “Martha is a seasoned executive with a 20+ year track record working in behavioral health and leading high-performing teams. I am excited to have her directing operations and expansion efforts nationwide and serving as an executive thought partner.”

Nationwide In-Home Addiction Treatment Expansion

As part of its growth strategy, Aware Recovery Care plans to extend services to Kentucky, bringing its state footprint to 10. The organization also intends to launch programs in New York and Georgia, in addition to expanding in five existing state markets in 2023, though specific locations were not disclosed. This in-home addiction treatment expansion aligns with the company’s mission to make high-quality care more accessible to communities nationwide.

The focus on in-home care allows patients to receive clinically supervised support while remaining in a familiar environment, which can improve outcomes and reduce barriers to treatment. By leveraging Mather’s leadership and experience, Aware Recovery Care is well-positioned to execute this in-home addiction treatment expansion effectively and sustainably.

Looking Ahead

Aware Recovery Care’s leadership and strategic expansion highlight the company’s commitment to addressing one of the most significant health challenges facing Americans today. With Mather at the helm of operations and Holzer’s vision for growth, the organization is poised to provide high-quality, accessible care to even more individuals struggling with substance use disorder.

The ongoing in-home addiction treatment expansion represents a major step forward in making treatment more flexible, patient-centered, and widely available. By focusing on accessibility, clinical excellence, and operational efficiency, Aware Recovery Care is setting a standard for modern behavioral health services.
